Small Business Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition provides small organizations with many of the features used by large organizations — email, an Internet connection, internal Web sites, remote access, support for mobile devices, file and printer sharing, backup, and restore — in an integrated product that supports up to 75 users.
Included Technologies
Small Business Server 2003 Standard combines these Windows server technologies:
- The core Windows Server technologies, including network tools and network security; file, print, and application sharing; and firewall protection (but not including technologies appropriate only to medium-to-large enterprises)
- SharePoint Services for an internal Web site
- Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook for email, messaging, personal information management, and shared calendaring
- Server Update Services for automated network-wide patch and update management
- Shared Fax Service
Licensing and Installation
This product includes two types of licenses:
- A server license
- Five client access licenses (CALs)
A CAL is required for every device or user that accesses the server. With device CALs, any user can access the server on the licensed device. With user CALs, licensed users can access the server from any device. The CALs included in Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition can be used for either users or devices. More CALs for SBS can be ordered in packs of five user or device CALs.
A new feature of the R2 release is that these CALs can be used to access additional servers running Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003, and SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition on the SBS 2003 R2 network.
Installing this product requires a license key and installation media. After your order is processed, instructions for obtaining the license key will be sent to your organization email address and the media disk to your shipping address.

Automatic data backup and the ability to retrieve and restore previous versions

Automated patch and update management tools keep workstations and servers up to date, and a daily email report helps identify issues before they occur. A green check indicates that the system is healthy, or the report details actions necessary for attaining green-check status.

Under the Software Assurance program, customers acquire the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of their coverage.
- Resources (such as Internet access and software) and equipment (printers, and fax machines) can be shared across the organization, and users can fax directly from their workstations.
